Hey, everyone! My first piece of advice is to remember that everyone goes through the awkward stages of a new relationship and getting to know someone , regardless of disabilities. I clearly have a physical disability, but I used to think that it was best just to ignore that obvious fact unless my partner or potential partner wanted to talk about it. But that makes the situation awkward for both sides of the relationship. The person with disabilities feels on guard, just waiting for the hammer to drop. Remember, they like you and have an interest in you, regardless of your disability. So, talk about it. You could always take the initiative and call to ask, or you could visit the places, of course.

Dating as a Gay Man Is Tough, Having Cerebral Palsy Makes It Tougher

One of the biggest misconceptions about people with disabilities is that we have no desire to date, or have no understanding of what a relationship consists of. I can tell you first hand that this is false. I dream of having a ceremony in the smoky mountains of Tennessee, and getting to ride off afterward in a red Ford Truck with my future husband. Dating has been one of the most difficult parts of my life.

Ever since I hit puberty in middle school, I had an interest in dating and having a boyfriend as many young year-olds do.

My name is Jess Paciello, and I am 21 years old. I guess that makes me a millennial yikes! I do want to talk about dating with disabilities though, because I believe that this topic is super important. Discussing dating with disabilities is important, because often society views the disabled population as inferior and almost non-existent. This absurd idea is completely false. As someone with cerebral palsy myself, I think I hopefully can try to tackle this subject with some first hand experience!

It personally took me a long time to admit to myself that I had CP, and then accept my body for all that it is. One of the biggest pieces of advices I can give to those of you who want to begin dating is please make sure you are ready to! I was one of those people who rushed it in the beginning, and that did not end in my favor.

I have been lucky and I am incredibly grateful for that; every guy who I have dated has been so gracious when I told them about cerebral palsy, and what that means for how my body functions, and they all have said that CP is really a non-issue for them. It funny thinking about how I was treated, because I am now reflecting on the fact that there may have been some level of self-sabotage on my end which ultimately led to some dating demise.

Again, gaining confidence in yourself is incredibly important here! I have been working on building my self-confidence for a long time now, and I am finally in a good place, so I promise you it can happen! So… what happens when you are ready to date because you are confident in yourself and your self worth?

Cerebral Palsy

Last Friday, my girlfriend Laura and I went to Open Stage, a club in Coral Gables, Florida, to meet some of our high school classmates for a fun-filled evening of karaoke and drinks. Unlike our first karaoke night back in October, the turnout was small; when we got to the club, we found out that it was just us and Anita, the organizer of the event.

Maybe it was because the event was held on a Friday night and it was hard for many of the invitees to go to a club for drinks and singing almost right after work.

Disabled people are capable of dating non-disabled people. However, I never thought I’d find someone willing to be in a relationship with me.

If you currently have CP, then perhaps you need a bit of advice on how you can effectively and kindly enforce boundaries and communicate with your partner. But doing all of this research can also cause you to see your partner as, first and foremost, someone who has a disability. You should feel free to ask me any questions you like as we continue to see each other because I am the ultimate authority on the uniqueness of my condition.

There will be a learning curve on both ends, for sure. But the sooner you communicate , answer questions, and give gentle reminders to an overly-enthusiastic partner, the better off you both will be. Yes, their ability to help you with chores, etc. It can be infantilizing when you try to speak for me. You may be tired of constantly having to explain what CP is, or you may not want to deal with annoying questions like whether or not your able-bodied date is your nurse.

Dating someone who shares your condition is also an awesome way to enjoy life and get your confidence up. There are a few things you may need to take into consideration to ensure that everything goes smoothly. You can call ahead and ask, or even do a quick visit there to make sure everything looks good.

I am a year-old male with cerebral palsy, and all my life I have walked with the aid of forearm crutches. We had reached the final scene of the movie where Ariel and Eric are getting married. My mom immediately became confused. After all, most young girls dream of their wedding day — especially with the way all the Disney movies I was obsessed with romanticized them. Somehow, at the young age of 4, I had already received this societal message that people with physical disabilities do not find their Happily Ever After.

This happened nearly 20 years ago, and yet the message still haunts me like a looming shadow just over my shoulder.

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter when it comes to people with disabilities is dating — mostly that we are not able to understand the meaning of being in a committed relationship, or that we even have the desire to be in a relationship. From my personal experience , ever since I entered my pre-teen years, I have always dreamt about finding my true southern beau that I could spend the rest of my life with. What attracted me to him the most was that he was the only boy in my entire grade that liked listening to country music.

He was an able-bodied young man, too, so, ya know wink, wink. This caused a lot of conflict and arguments, since he never wanted to hang out with me outside of school or on school trips. However, it also taught me that when it comes to dating and putting myself out there, my disability has to be an open discussion.

Loving yourself before others and society is the first step to finding the direction you were meant to take in your personal journey. I was only with my ex-boyfriend Kent a year. I met him in computer class when I transferred to a brand new school in 10th grade. He, too, was an able-bodied young man.
